INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Once again Belize joins the other member States of the United Nations in celebrating International Human Rights Day today, December 10, 2019. The theme chosen by the General Assembly of the United Nations is “Youth Standing up for Human Rights”. It is acknowledged that the idealism of youth should be used by empowering them to stand up for equal rights and fair treatment to
everyone everywhere.

Here in Belize can we honestly say that we are empowering our youths to stand up for human rights? Are they being taught the importance of human rights? Our youths are the future leaders who will be making the decisions for our country. Are we sure that they understand that human rights are the foundation of peace, development and justice? HRCB believes that if more emphasis is placed on the teaching of human rights in the schools our youths will be more empowered to stand up for equal rights and fair treatment to everyone.

We would hope that when our young people take their place in the working world and are given positions of authority this authority is not abused in the manner in which they treat people. Fair treatment to everyone should an effect on how
marginalized persons are treated and the opportunities made available to them.

HRCB reiterates the message that human rights are universal – everyone has human rights, no matter who you are or where you come from. It is something that you are born with because you are a human being. It is not given to you by
any law. Along with the rights that we have come responsibilities which place a duty on us to make our communities the best that they can be.
